My background and how I can speak about disability and related issues with such conviction and knowledge
Dr Robert D Gravelle,
Director of Gravelles Mobility and Lifestyle.
Many people have recently asked about my background and how I can speak about disability and related issues with such conviction and knowledge. So I thought that I would give a brief overall of my background and experience.
However, it must be said that the team here at Gravelles Mobility & Lifestyle is extremely well experienced in all areas of disability including direct experience themselves of such issues as elderly care, child care, pharmaceuticals, disability, research, product evaluation, educational formulation/training, human factors analysis and design, and the NHS
Myself have a direct understanding of the issues that affect the disabled person their carer and the healthcare professional, gained from educational, industrial, NHS and personal experience: -
Educationally my experience includes, a Bachelor of Arts (Ba) – Industrial / Product Design), Masters of Arts (Ma) - Design and Manufacture and most recently a PhD in Social Anthropology / Human Factors Analysis, focusing on prosthetics development and evaluation.
My Industrial experience includes the design and evaluation of products and graphics that have been adopted by several sectors of industry, large and small. Furthermore, I have extensive lecturing experience gained from several years and courses at De Montfort University Leicester, including, Ba Design Management, Ba Product Design, Bsc Industrial Design, Masters Design and Manufacture and student mentoring and supervision at all levels.
Additionally, but fundamental to the Gravelles concept has been my experiences with the NHS as a consultant, charged with, assessing and improving the structure of patient assessment and product delivery in terms of prosthetics development, patient awareness, communication, manufacture and the overall improvement of prosthetics quality and suitability to the patient/client, within the NHS Trust structure.
Personally I have over 30 years of experience as a disabled person with varying degrees of limitation, including being wheelchair bound, having limited dexterity and mobility.
My unique understanding and approach to the issues encompassed within the field of disability give me a personal and holistic approach, which has often resulted in the improvement of protocols, systems and indeed products not only for the disabled individual but for the community at large.
Again, it must be said that the team here at Gravelles is unique in its self.
