An evacuation mat is a flexible, padded sheet that wraps around or supports a person and slides down stairs using a low-friction base. They fold away compactly and are lightweight, typically under 6 kg. An evacuation sled is a more rigid platform that provides greater structural support, making it better suited for heavier individuals or longer stairway descents. The right choice depends on your building layout, the needs of your occupants, and your staffing levels.

Under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the responsible person for a building must ensure that everyone, including those with disabilities or reduced mobility, can evacuate safely. Where lifts cannot be used during a fire, evacuation mats, pads, or sleds provide a compliant means of escape for individuals who cannot use stairs unaided. Each person who would need one should have a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) in place.

Yes. Under the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER), evacuation equipment must be maintained in safe working order. We recommend annual servicing to check straps, stitching, base material, and storage bag condition. Our evacuation equipment servicing can schedule this for you on a contract or one-off basis.
